“No maids, no humorous speaking, no fainting flowers.”

I’ve seen a whole lot of evaluations evaluate Siren Queen by Nghi Vo to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, however I can’t verify that as a result of I haven’t learn the latter but (I do know, I KNOW!). I can, nonetheless, verify that Siren Queen follows the story of a younger, rising actress in Old Hollywood, who’s keen to make offers with the Devil and barter with what little she has with a purpose to obtain her dream of turning into a star.

We first meet Luli Wei when she is a toddler, buying and selling locks of hair and years off her life to get into cinemas to look at silent movies. She’s instantly enamored, and is aware of she’ll do no matter it takes to get herself up on the massive display screen. However, in a world filled with magic and crafty executives who care extra about appearances and cash than precise folks, she’ll should discover ways to play their video games.

But she does greater than that. Luli refuses to be a tame, quiet girl on set. She refuses to be type-cast, and as an alternative embodies the roles and characters she performs with a purpose to garner respect and harness her personal energy. She’s not precisely loveable, however that’s high-quality; she’s fierce and in command of herself, which many despise her for, but it surely made me love her much more.

This story is fantastically written, in Vo’s signature prose, and captures the tough actuality of Hollywood whereas portray it as a dreamy, magical setting that one can’t assist to admire. While I used to be somewhat bothered by the shortage of context surrounding the magic on this world, general, I completely cherished this story.

Luli’s character was gorgeous – I admired her energy, how she remained true to herself, and the way she didn’t let folks stroll throughout her.

Thank you Tor Dot Com Publishing for sending me a digital copy of Siren Queen by Nghi Vo to evaluation by way of NetGalley. I cherished it a lot I purchased it as soon as it got here out!
