Unix for Journalism – Computational Methods within the Civic Sphere – danwin.com

I’ve

been too busy with educating and different issues to weblog…most of my writing is at the moment being executed for my class, Computational Methods within the Civic Sphere, which is aimed toward college students within the Stanford Journalism Masters program, however open to any scholar. It has about 30 college students at the moment, few with any programming expertise, and so they’re all studying methods to do issues from the command-line.

While I do love the command-line, my intention is to make use of the command-line’s step-by-step nature, and the Unix philosophy of “Do one factor and do it effectively” to point out how advanced computational duties might be damaged right down to a sequence of discrete, explainable-to-an-eight-year-old steps…although the design and sum of these steps might be intimidating.

One of my favourite classes I’ve written to date: Montage the world from the command-line with Google and Instagram, which explains methods to mix information from two APIs to create a montage of any location on the earth…and beginning simply from the common-or-garden command-line.
